Despite the loss, South Carolina remains an elite team

South Carolina women's basketball team's recent 87-58 loss to UConn, their first home loss in 71 games. This defeat casts doubt on their previously assumed path to the Final Four.

While still a strong contender, the loss likely impacts their chances of securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, which has been crucial for their past Final Four appearances under Coach Staley. All of Staley's Final Four teams were No. 1 seeds.

Despite the loss, South Carolina remains an elite team, having already faced many of their toughest opponents.

The team's performance in the upcoming SEC tournament will be crucial for their seeding and overall tournament prospects. While the loss is a setback, it doesn't necessarily preclude them from reaching the Final Four.  This year's journey might be more challenging and ultimately more rewarding than last year's dominant, but less adversity-filled, run.

“Major implosion for us,” said USC coach Dawn Staley.

This season is a long season, right? You play a team like UConn right now (and) you win, it may have some ill effects in the next game you lose. And it definitely will wake you up. Hopefully it’ll be the latter.
