Report: Cleveland Rockers to return to WNBA as 2028 expansion team

The WNBA is expanding significantly. The league will add the Golden State Valkyries in 2025, Toronto and Portland in 2026, and according to the Sports Business Journal Cleveland Rockers in 2028.

This will bring the league to 16 teams, up from just 12 in 2024.

The Rockers were a founding WNBA team but ceased operations in 2003 due to low attendance.

Several other cities (Miami, Detroit, Houston, Austin and Nashville) vied for the expansion spot, but according to the sources Cleveland was ultimately chosen, marking a return of women's professional basketball to the city.

While the league is at 16 teams for now, further expansion is possible in the future given the WNBA's growing popularity.
